Question
Thinking about traveling to Samana Bay Village in December with the family. Curious to know if traveling with a 9 and 11 year old if much to do and a decent resort. Also with much of the issues stemming from Haiti how safe is travel in DR??

Thank you for your assistance.

Answer
HI AGAIN, DREW! One more thing: for specific resorts, visit www.debbiesdominicantravel.com and read visitor reviews. THAT SHOULD HELP TOO!
Hi, Drew! Second question first: The DR is totally safe for tourists and Samana is, well, about as far from the Haitian (rural) border as Boston is from New York or Toronto is from Montreal -- and Haitians don't have cars! You will find the DR in general, with the exception of a few neighborhoods in far away Santo Domingo, safe for all family members 24 hours a day, assuming you are not stupid enough to walk around waving money in the air. Samana Bay should be an excellent place for kids, although I have not actualy stayed at any Samana resorts. If you like the beach, there's plenty to do there and you will be offered several excursions as well. Take one, especially those into what is called the "outback." Like most DR resorts, it's not a Hilton and service will be a bit slower than North Americans and Eurorpeans are used to, but far more friendly. Just be patient and you'll have a good time. Bring along some bug repellent for excursions and something in case you develop diarrhea, but if you don't drink water that is not bottled water ("agua purificada" in Spanish) you should be fine. Have a good time! -- George
