Doors, The (Jim Morrison) - Intervention for Jim

Expert: JayDixon - 12/12/2008

Question
Jim Morrison was an extremely talented person with self-destructive tendencies.  The lyrics of "The End" and "When the Music's Over" should have made it obvious that he was headed for trouble, even an early death. Did any of his close friends try intervene and seek him professional help?  Or were they enablers who took part in his self-destructive behaviors, such as alcoholism?

Answer
Jim was a loner and not so much self destructive but a person who wanted to try everything and push the limits. He would experiment with things/substances, get bored with that and go searching for a bigger buzz either in life or trying something man made. Yes, people did try to help him with his alcohol use including Ray Manzarek, Bill Siddons (Doors manager at the time) Pamela Courzon (Jim’s girlfriend and Tony Funches (Morrison’s bodyguard) Alcohol it seems was Jim’s favourite addiction and from all the accounts he loved to drink, even though help and advice was offered he declined it. You can’t help someone with a problem if they don’t want to be helped yes?
A lot of the others it’s true. They took advantage of Jim such as the media, hangers on etc and encouraged him to do even crazier things. However Morrison was a great judge of a person (stoned or sober) and knew who was with him or against him.
Prior to his death in 1971 whilst living in Paris, Pamela Courzon persuaded Jim to see
a doctor in France on three occasions. The doctor(s) all urged him to quit drinking as damage to his body was starting to show and he was coughing up blood and also his asthma was playing up. He was prescribed an asthma medication and was strongly  warned against using alcohol and taking the medication for reasons of strain on the heart, but to no avail.

Hope this of some help in answering your question.
Cheers,
