Doors, The (Jim Morrison) - Appearance Vs Reality

Expert: JayDixon - 1/28/2009

Question
Hi,
i recently recieved the topic of "Appearance Vs Reality" in my english class, and this topic will be my entire subject key for the rest of the year. Being that i am a HUGE Pink Floyd and Doors(Jim Morrison) fan, i was wondering if you could help me connect any lyrics from their careers to my assigned topic. Thank you very Much

Answer
Sam.

I commend your English teacher obviously a person who is endeavouring to get you thinking and ready for life.

I have sung in a couple of bands Sam and when you write songs and perform them on stage reality goes out the window because it’s a show!

Reality often comes into play when writing a song, but the appearance to the people who listen to it is totally different. A song (lyric) means something totally different and personal to the listener, depends on what is happening in their life at the time.

Example: I wrote a song in late 2000 called Has Time Gone Too Far. I wrote that about my ex wife whom I was missing at 3am one morning at that particular time. Australian country star Troy Cassar-Daley loved the song and recorded it because although it was written from my personal experience he felt it would touch or identify with a mass audience. So reality was that I was feeling hurt. I wrote a song just for me. Appearance was that it was a song that could cross over. Get the picture?

Has Time Gone Too Far (Lyric sheet only)

But I was looking at your photograph
And a smile came to my face
For it took me out of the here and now
And way back to a better place

Chorus.
I want to send you a card
So I can write down some things
But has time gone too far
For new memories and golden rings
Has time gone too far
Is that how the story ends?
You see in my fairytale
One day you came back again

The Doors and more so Jim Morrison well he wrote many songs that transcend reality v appearance. One that springs to mind is Break On Through.

He wrote that with Pamela Susan Courson in mind (December 22, 1946 - April 25, 1974) At the time Jim was going through other affairs with women, drugs and booze. But he wanted them both to sort out their respective lives because they loved each other. Neil Young wrote Cinnamon Girl about Pam Courson. Reality v Appearance sadly in this case never came came to fruition.

There are many others I could name regarding The Doors. LA Woman was inspired by reality then became a song of appearance that is open to interpretation. Jim returning to LA and all the lifestyle that entailed.

Sam I hope I have helped you somewhat? And good luck in 2009 with your English classes.

Cheers,
