Question In the Android and Cell saga’s the story told itself where Gohan would be the strongest and be the one that saves the day. If you watch that saga again it all makes sense.
But in the Majin Boo and Kid Boo saga the story was a little bit unclear, why?
The first proof was SSJ3 Goku vs. Majin Boo (Fat):
.Goku himself made it clear that at SSJ3 he didn’t have the power to fully destroy Fat Boo, in the anime Piccolo asked Goku if he really wanted to could he have destroyed Fat Boo, and Goku answered no, also when Goku transformed into SSJ3, Piccolo said Goku has transformed into something beyond anything he could imagined, but Majun Boo power may be stronger.
Supreme Kai also said the same thing and told Gohan the only way to beat Majin was with the Z sword which means the training from the old kai.
Now the unclear part is when Goku gets his life back from Old Kai and fights Kid Boo. These are the unclear parts for me:
.At first SSJ3 Goku matches Kid Boo, as the fight drags on its clear that SSJ3 can’t match Kid Boo. So then Vegeta tells Goku at SSJ3 he should have the power to destroy Kid Boo, and then Goku says he could have when he was at full power.
So from that the story builds up Gohan as the main character to save the earth. The reason I said this is because:
.Supreme Kai choose Gohan to be the one that pulls the Z Sword.
.Old Kai brings out Gohan full power so that he can destroy Majin Boo.
To me, it seems the story was rushed or the author changed his mind when writing the manga.
Maybe he wanted Gohan, but the fans forced him to let Goku be the hero once again. What do you think?
Any proof?
Answer It was more unclear than the previous sagas, but it wasn't all that unclear. The fact is that SS3 Goku was stronger than Fat Buu, and just because he told Piccolo that he wasn't sure if he could have beaten him, it didn't mean that he wasn't. He explained clearly to Piccolo that he had faith in the Fusion technique, and that was his answer to Piccolo when Piccolo asked him why he didn't at least try to kill Fat Buu, in addition to saying he wasn't sure if he could have. Then before he fought Kid Buu, he said in regret that he could have beaten Fat Buu on Earth, but he wanted Goten and Trunks to fend for themselves, since it would be better for the Earth's future then if he would have simply bailed them out. When he told Piccolo that he wasn't sure if he could beat him, he was just wanting to not sound ridiculous by not saying the truth which was that he would rather take the risk of relying on Goten and Trunks than to do it himself. So SS3 Goku could in fact beat Fat Buu, and he could have also beat Kid Buu if he hadn't let the fight drag on to give Vegeta a chance to fight.
Supreme Kai also said that Gohan using the Z-Sword was the only way to beat Buu, and the reason he relied on Gohan instead of Goku was because Goku was dead and Gohan was alive, so after that day had been done, Gohan actually would have been capable of fighting Buu unlike Goku. Supreme Kai also didn't even know where Goku was, or that he was a SS3 at the time he decided Gohan was the best hope. The Elder Kai emerging and strengthening Gohan was completely by chance, and Ultimate Gohan enhanced by Elder Kai was indeed stronger than SS3 Goku, but it wasn't until after Gohan was outsmarted by Buu that the Elder Kai was smart enough to give Goku a free life as a last resort, and King Yemma sending Vegeta was a lucky coincedence that saved the Universe as a whole, because together they were able to beat Buu. It's still not like Goku did it all alone, Vegeta was a huge part of it.
Also when SS3 Goku fought Fat Buu, it's highly doubtful that he was going all-out. Because if he had been he would have won, and going all-out would have also drained his time remaining on Earth much faster and he wouldn't have been able to teach the Fusion technique. So SS3 Goku against Kid Buu was stronger and more powered up than he was against Fat Buu, which is why when Supreme Kai sensed SS3 Goku from Other World that he still figured the Z-Sword was the best hope. Remember that when Goku fought Fat Buu his only intention was to stall for Trunks, he had no desire to beat him. He wanted Buu to be beaten by Earthlings, and not himself.
Now as you suggested, it is possible that Akira Toriyama felt obligated to have Goku be the hero instead of Gohan due to the desires of fans, but there is no proof, and if that is the case, he likely decided to do it by having Super Buu fool Gohan.
You must also remember too though, that if Gohan had beaten Buu, both Goku and Vegeta would have had to stay dead. So I think Toriyama's overall way of finishing it was pretty ingenious, especially if there was no influence from the fans wanting Goku to finish the last villain. Thanks for the great question!
