Drawing/Calligraphy/Cartooning/drawing a cogwheel

Question
I need to draw a cogwheel (needs to be accurate). Can you help?

I'd be grateful for any information!

Answer
Well, I'd suggest either being very careful with a compass and ruler, or using a CAD/drawing program, in which case there should be shortcuts described in your manual for creating radial symmetry.

If you're drawing it by hand, I suggest you use a compass to draw an inner circle in pencil, then an outer circle for the cog teeth, and then use a protractor to measure off equal intervals for the cog teeth and spaces between them.

Hope that helps a little!

Expertise

I can answer questions about classic-era and modern American comic strips, and have a good store of knowledge about animation and animated cartoons of the past. I know a bit about some American and European comic books (Humor only.) I can help with questions about traditional media and some computer methods of drawing and animating. And I can recommend some excellent and useful books! I can't give any idea of the monetary value of original artwork/animation cels, etc. PLEASE DON'T ASK ME ABOUT COLLECTIBLES!

Experience

I have been cartooning and studying cartooning and animation for over 25 years. I maintain a comics website online, and have created online tutorials for using Painter 5 and beginning 3D art creation. I am also a library technician, with experience in research. I have frequently answered questions at CartoonsForum.com.
