Dream Interpretation - A mysterious re-occuring wolf encounter dream

Expert: Peregrin Walker - 8/30/2009

Question
Hello Peregrine

I've been having a strange dream. It re-occurs randomly, but doesn't seem to have a clear meaning to me.

When the dream starts off, I am in a lone desert, by myself. Nothing around but sand and night. The sky is clear and the full moon is high until suddenly a sandstorm rises and rushes over the area. I can't move from where I was, so I get trapped in the storm for a couple of seconds until I get covered by a shadow from the light of the moon, and, surprisingly, the storm. I look up almost automatically to see I am at the bottom of a cliff, which is blocking the sand storm. At the top, a wolf-like shadowy figure stands on it, looking down at me. His eyes are clear white, like the moon, almost like I was looking straight through his eyes at it. He then turns to me and jumps down to me. When he gets close, I wake up.

The wolf somehow visits me randomly and I can't seem to connect it to any events in my current life. I just started school and I'm a little stressed out from performing arts, but this dream began way before school ended last year and continued through summer. Please help me as to why I'm getting this visit and what the meaning of this visit is.

Answer
Good morning, Michaela.

I'm inclined to think that your wolf is not as threatening as you fear.

The desert is a place that supports no life - not technically true, but your dream desert has only sand and the night.  When you find yourself in this setting, you probably feel that you have no support either, and no road to follow - no guidance.

The storm approaching represents your feeling of anxiety.  Your future seems vague to you right now, and all you know is that things are going to change - this is the storm.  It throws things into disarray and chaos.  Its shadow looms over your life, so I'm placing it in your future.  Possibly this represents your eventual graduation.

You find yourself at a cliff, blocking the storm.  This is a measure of safety - you have some kind of protection here.  Someone in your life is a "rock" to you.

The wolf is interesting because he seems to be guarding this cliff.  And your description of his eyes is interesting - it is almost as if the wolf embodies the night.  This could possibly put your wolf into the category of "totem" or "spirit guide."  Which leads me to question:  Is the leap at you an attack, or an attempt to get closer?

Since this dream figure repeats itself, you just might be able to find out.  Make up your mind that you will not wake up - you will not flee the wolf.  It may take a while, but see what happens - there may be a message here for you.

Pleasant dreams,

Peregrin
