Dream Interpretation - Dream within a dream (re-occuring)

Question
I keep on having dreams where I wake up in my dream and continue the event. During the dream I realize that I am dreaming and start explaining  my present state (in my dream) that I had dreamt another dream. It is like I am explaining to myself in my dream that I am dreaming- but then explain another dream. I have done this three times in the past two weeks. Is this normal?

Answer
Good morning, Annelle.

Yes, this kind of dream is normal.  It's frustrating, though, isn't it?  At least, I find them so.

When you realize that you're dreaming, the dream has transitioned to what is called a "lucid" dream.  This is a mixed state of consciousness.  Many people enjoy this type of dream because it allows them to take control of what happens.

But you don't take control of the dream - at least, this is what I get from the statement "continue the event."  You keep on with whatever action was going on before you "woke up," is that right?  You may not feel as if you are in control of your life.

And the idea of explaining, first that you are dreaming, and then to explain a different dream - that, I find unusual.  I suspect that you have a dream message that is very important to understand, so much so that you are breaching the walls that are erected every night.  There seem to be two lessons:

1) This is what a dream is, and you are dreaming.  This is to let you know that what you are experiencing is not reality, and that you can change things.  Is there something going on in your life that seems out of your control?  Maybe it really isn't.

2)  This is what this other dream means.  Are you explaining a dream that you actually have had in the past, or is this a dream-manufactured memory?  I'm guessing that it's the former, and that it is very important that you comprehend it.  The fact that it keeps happening over and over reinforces that idea.  Once we understand a dream, we don't usually have it again because the lesson is learned.

Another thing to consider is, what direction are you taking in your life?  Is it your own dream that you follow, or someone else's dream for you?  For instance, when my wife first started college, it was in a major field of study that she really didn't want.  It was her parents that chose it for her, and ultimately she failed because it wasn't her dream.  This (or something similar) might be why you explain a different dream, within the dream you are having.

What I would do, if it were me going through this, is pay close attention to what I'm trying to explain when this happens.  Keep a notebook handy and write everything down as soon as you really do awaken.  And good luck!

Pleasant dreams,

Peregrin
