Question
Hi Mike,
What are the best pro-quality drums, hardware and cymbals for playing reggae/latin/afro-beat?
And what would be the most appropriate gear for starting out playing gigs in these genres?
Thankyou.

Answer
Carly---

Please do not be offended by my answer---

ANY drums can be used to play ANY type of music.
Any brand--any age--almost any condition and any sizes.

Cymbals--you probably should use smaller, lighter cymbals for that type of music.
You should also incorporate splashes--chinas and other effects cymbals.
You probably should have a couple of blocks (different pitches)--
a couple of cowbells and an agogo bell.

Go watch a drummer or percussionist play live gigs and get idea from them.
You could also look at some DVD's of those styles of music.

Hope this helps.
Mike
