Expert: James Moyer Date: 5/10/2008 Subject: WHAT are my drums?!
Question James Im a 40 year old drummer thats been playing the same set since high school and I'm ready for a new set. The set that I have I bought used in the mid 80's. Here is what I know: Slingerland set, enlarged set! 24" to a 26" kick, 18" floor tom and two mounted toms sizes I'm not sure of. the set is at my church for the time being. the finish is a marine "pearl" white. the serial number plate is oval, silver letters with black background, the serial number on the kick is 414408, Niles Ill. usa . sorry for such a long drawn out "question" but I'm planning on selling and moving up and I want to be able to ask a "fair" price. thanks ahead of time for YOUR time. If you need any other info please write. thanks again.
Answer Ron,
Thanks for your question. Your set is from around the very last Slingerland sets before the company closed. About 10 years or so later, Gibson Guitar Company purchased the trademark and began selling Slingerland drums through their dealers, although the shells they use are made by Keller, so Slingerland does little more than put their parts and badge on.
You drums were possibly part of the Gene Krupa model, also similar to what Buddy Rich used for years. These sets were only in white marine pearl. See picture here.
However, the Krupa kit typically had 2 floor toms.
Are you selling this with the hardware? Are you selling cymbals? Selling the drums with the stands, pedal and stool will get you a quicker sale and a better price. This set will likely go to a rocker that likes big drums.
If you are selling with the hardware and no cymbals and the set is in very good condition, meaning the pearl is not bubbled anywhere or is damaged and the chrome is not rusted, then you can probably get $500-$750 for it. Maybe 15 years ago you could have gotten more, but there are tons of drum sets on the market now that are decent and under $500 new.
If you want a true appraisal and don't mind spending a little money to get it, contact Ned at the website below. Some of how you price this depends on what set you are looking for to buy (how much you want to spend).
