Question
Hi,

I got my Pearl Export on tuesday and it was a little out of tune. this is my first kit, so I watched another drummer and watched a few videos on how to tune my kit and I did. The kit now sounds OK tone-wise. I just wanted to ask how do i stop my toms from ringing so much, especially my small tom. After even a gentle strike, it rings for at least 3 seconds!!!!!

My floor tom also sounds really deep and powerful, which I like, but rings for about 7 seconds.

I have pearl heads on the floor tom, a clear top head on my small tom [the name has worn off] and an Evans Genera G2 on the bottom of it. My middle tom is really not an issue to be honest, it rings for about 0.5-1 second and I like that. On the middle tom I have a remo weatherking pinstripe and a premier "clhead" on the bottom if that helps?

Thanks very much If you can help me

Alastair

Answer
1st, realize a few things about drums:

1--DRUMS RING!!!!!  This is what gives drums their power and tone.

2--DRUMS SOUND TOTALLY DIFFERENT OUT FRONT THAN THEY DO SITTING
   BEHIND THEM.

3--IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET ANY TYPE OF A UNIFORM SOUND OUT OF
  MISMATCHED HEADS.

The usual is 2 ply heads on top--1 ply heads on the bottom.

I recommend Evans. Try G2 clear heads on the top and G1 clear on
 the bottoms.
If the toms and snare ring too much, you can get plastic rings that lay on the top drum head. They work wonders.

Use a Genera HDD on the snare and an EQ2 on the back of the bass.
YOu can use the front head that is on there, but get a stick on hole for the front.Every company makes one.
Get the smallest one.
Stick it on the back side--around the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position--then take a very sharp knife and cut out the center of the hole.
Then put a small blanket inside where it is just touching both heads.

If you REALLY want to learn to tune drums, pick up these 2 items:

*--Drum Tuning--by Larry Nolly
*Drum Tuning & Design-bt Bob Gatzen

"Drummers practice playing, but do not practice tuning."

Hope this helps.

Mike
