Hi Mike,

I've got a couple of "drum experiments" in the works, and they involve cutting down existing drum shells to make smaller drums.

I read that a table saw is the best tool to use for doing this, but I'm kind of concerned about trying to trim a bass drum shell with a table saw. The whole process seems like it might get unwieldy and I don't want to be a guinea pig for prosthetic limbs or facial reconstructing.

I'm sure you've probably done this sort of thing before. What would be your preferred method?

if you have never done this before---OR----
you do not have an experienced woodworker that could help you---


PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS!!!!!


I have seen what can happen when the shell binds up and comes off the table saw at 150 mph!!!!

It can kill you!!!

Or at least, it can do a LOT of bodily harm.

I use a table saw---BUT--I grew up with power tools.
Other kids had toys---I had power tools.

YOu can cut a shell down with a good jig saw and a sharp blade---BUT--- that is only 1/3 of the process.

After you cut the shell, then you have to make it "Square" or "Flat" ---
THen you have to recut a bearing edge.

Then you have to "seal" the raw wood.
