Drums & Percussion - slingerland drums

Expert: James Moyer - 6/12/2009

Question
hello i found a set of slingerland drums on craigslist  and the  ad said imported not vintage  can u tell me what kind of shell it is

Answer
Hi Brian,

I'm afraid I need much more information to help you. There are dozens of drum set companies in the world and sadly. many are made in China. The Asian drums from China and Japan include Mapex, Pearl, Tama and Yamaha. All of these companies use a variety of wood for the shells. So, unless someone is looking at the drum and KNOWS woods, it's impossible to know.

Slingerland has been out of business for decades, then "came back" after they were bought by a guitar company named Gibson. The "new" Slingerland's are OK although there is much better on the market now.

Maple and birch and your 2 best woods for shells, Mahogany and Poplar are used for intermediate level sets. Cheap sets in general are made from Basswood.
