Drums & Percussion - hi hat cymbal repair

Expert: Lynne May - 7/4/2009

Question
i have a hi hat cymbal, but they do not stay apart, i am able to move the pedal, and the middle bar moves, but i cannot get the two cymbals to stay apart, regardless of how much i tighten them.  any ideas?

Answer
Hi, Steph--

The wing nut strips after a while, especially on less expensive clutches. Just go to your local music store and buy a new clutch. It is very inexpensive and easy to install.

Best Wishes,
Lynne
