About Greg Dilley Expertise I can answer questions pertaining to drum and bugle corps rudimental snare drumming, specifically technical questions regarding snare drum technique and issues regarding the drumming style of the Santa Clara Vanguard of the 70`s era.
Experience I played snare drum in the Santa Clara Vanguard in 1978, 1979 and 1980. The 78 and 79 lines were world champion lines who pioneered the use of matched grip for snare drum. I was the anchorman for the 1980 snare line.
Question I am learning to play the drums and just purchased a JDS student kit used for $150 did I for one get a good deal and for two who is JDS and how old is this kit cuz its in almost new condition and hasnt been played much
Answer Hi Eric -
I'm not familiar with the brand name "JDS" but I assume it's a student level set of drums produced by some bigger company.
$150.00 is a fine price for your first set of drums. Don't worry about whether you got the best deal or not. Drums are sound-sources and different from instruments such as vintage violins and such. You'll eventually begin to modify and change your set, and then as time goes by look for a better set of drums.
I subscribe to the motto "a good solution today is better then the best solution tomorrow".
Good luck with your drumming adventure. You may want to consider getting yourself a practice pad to work on your rudiments with. Also as you upgrade in the future, consider buying things such as a better bass pedal (no hurry) and equipment that is directly related to your own performance development.
