Question
Hi!
I was wondering if you could answr my long wondered question: ive been to a few random gigs, Al DiMeola`s concert at the jazz festival in Kaunas, Lithuania. My question is; at these concerts, there has been a member of the band, sitting on a kind of box, which is used as a percussional instrument. I presume that this is a proper insrument, but I would really like to know what its name is, as i would like to buy one and learn to play (I play normal conventional drums), but I havent been able to find one in a music shop, because i dont know what the particular instrument is called. I really hope you can help me.

Answer
Hello,

From the description provided, it sounds like you are talking about the cajón (pronounced ka-HON) from Cuba.

The cajón should be available through the LP percussion company, though many companies produce the instrument. An alternative to LP would be Kotz but with a little bit of an online search you may find a separate brand that's perfect to your taste.

Best of luck and happy drumming!

Sean
