Question My room was done in halfway down in drywall (from the ceiling) and from the floor to the halfway mark in wood paneling. The paneling was shimmed out to be flush with the drywall. I want to texture and then paint the entire wall but the seam between the paneling and drywall keeps cracking (hairline). How can I keep this from happening?
Answer Hello DB-
This one is a tough one. The simple answer would be to put a piece of wood trim at the transition. With that being said, the problem is you are trying to join two dis- similar materials. Both are of different mass and density, and as such they expand and contract at different rates, causing the action at the joint. This will cause the hairline crack you speak of. I will assume that the joint is taped, but this will usually crack anyway. Other than the trim, you could either overlay the entire wall with sheetrock, and finish, or remove the paneling and furring to add sheetrock below and tape to the top portion of the wall.
I hope this helps and if you have more questions, please ask- Maurice
