Julia,
A friend, Mike, has an Italian bakery and he paid a lot of money for a website that will allow him to sell his cookies and bread online (http://www.madonnasitaliancookies.com).  In a recent conversation, he stated that he was paying a lot of money every month for the hosting and additional money for paypal. What is a reasonable amount to pay for hosting and payment for a site?  Additionally, how can he get his site to appear in search results?  Any additional information is appreciated.

You need to find a web firm or domain and hosting services company that will offer a cheaper rate of hosting for you. This all depends on how much files you have to display on the site. To appear on search results some search engine optimization work needs to be done on your site.
