Question Hello. I am a RD (registered dietitian) and I am looking to start up my own online business within the next year. I am in the planning stages right now, but would be providing online/telephone counseling services, meal planning, recipe alterations, books, and other various health/fitness items (such as pedometers, water bottles, etc.). I have an idea of where I want to go and have someone who will create a site for me for a reasonable amount of money, but the problem is that I have no clue what all of the legalities would be in regard to owning your own online business, domain names, receiving payments from people, etc. I obviously do not want to create the site and get into everything until I know all of the steps I must take to make my business "legit" and prefectly legal.
I am just afraid that I will start it up and then find out that I am in big trouble because I did not do something I was supposed to or vice versa. The problem, however, is that I have no clue who to go to for this information and I really can not afford to pay a legal advisor to sit down with me and cover everything. I am on a very tight budget as it is. So, I was hoping that you could either direct me to someone who could help me figure out everything that needs to be done before opening my site up for business, so to speak, or provide me with some information yourself. I know that this is a hefty question, but I am at my wits end. I have such a desire to get this business started, but no idea what all must be done in order to make that happen. From what you wrote you should not have any problem when it comes to making this Legal because as a dietician, you know what you are doing and this is an idea of yours not copying any one. Documentation is essential in everything you will be doing to know when what was done and all of those. I actually specialise on how to get things sold on line or how to have services done via the internet like you want to do. All other things like having a business name and perhaps EIN you may want to read about, there will be lots of information out there.
