About Roger Ellman
Expertise
Helping small companies ensure their website has the right approach for greatest success in appealing to visitors, customers. Promotion effectively via the internet (but can answer only 1 or 2 specific questions at a time, here!). We know what works and what does not. We need a description of the website and the business it is serving (or intends to). I will try to proffer advice that bridges the gap between the "tech" or "IT" people and those with less of a technical approach. If you have the idea and are business-savvy - but the "newspeak" of high technology gets you down, you`ve come to the right place!

E-Commerce, Web Businesses - Selling your book on Amazon.com - Pros & Cons?

Expert: Roger Ellman - 12/6/2005

Question
Aloha,

I self-published a book, called Aloha Mannequins, that's available through Amazon.com and Lulu.com (my Print On Demand service).

The price is the same on both sites.

When a person buys the book from Lulu.com, I get a royalty of $3.00.

But when a person purchases a book from Amazon, my royalty is only 75 cents! (Due to their bite from the sale).

Should I remove my book from Amazon and heavily promote Lulu.com, the POD provider? Or should I stay on Amazon and use its popularity to my advantage? Or maybe do both?

Please advise, and thank you so much for your time!

Mahalo,
Raym

Answer
I think that the main argument For staying with a site that gives you a mere 75 cent resukt from the sale of ech book is if you wish to achieve a huge sale volime and impress a publisher to take on your book. Otherwise waiting for 75 cent sales to reutn you anything significant is going to require superhuman parience.

This is my opinion based on no other knowledge of you, your plans etc and really is not an expert view!

Best wishes and successful writing and publshing
Roger
