Question
Someone already owns the website that I want. It is an individuals personal website. The website has not been updated since 2002 and expires next year. Should I purchase it from them now or wait till it expires and hope they don't renew it?

Answer
Tricky situation. It really depends on how important the domain is to the current owner. If you approach them now with an offer, they may ask for a really high price and renew the domain just to keep it from you. Or, if you're really honest and upfront with them - and offer a fair price, you just might get the domain now.

Waiting for it to expire should not be an option. The domain goes into a holding period for up to 75 days after expiration where no one can get it. It could also get snapped up by a reseller or domain auction company.

My recommendation: Find the current owner's phone number, call them, explain your need and ask them what a fair price would be. If its high, be calm and reason with them that although you would like the domain, it is a commodity with a certain value. Do you homework and show him what other "like" domains go for.

Hope this helps.
