Eagle Repair - 1997 Eagle Talon - Emissions

Expert: autohelp - 2/15/2005

Question
I recently purchased a 1997 Eagle Talon 2.0 TSI. I went to get it inspected and the car would not pass PA emissions. The emissions test is plugged into the computer. However, the OBD will not read. The computer is not talking, however I do not have a check engine light or any other indicator there is a problem. I have had the car checked by 3 different garages and they tell me to take it back to a Chrysler/Jeep dealer. I have taken it back to a Chrysler/Jeep dealer and they advised me the car needs 2 pin ADL connector. The dealer stated there should be two connectors to check the computers, however the car only has one? They can not test the car until I get that replaced. However I checked a couple of Mitsubishi Eclipses the same year and they only have one port to check it computer. Can you please help me. I am lost as to what I need to do and the dealer stated he was not sure what I could do ?  HELP ...  I need this car for work and general transportation.

Thank you,

Eric

Answer
OH, You have got yourself in a mess with this one.

Most likely the previous owner had some emissions problems and either had the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT bulb that is supposed to illuminate on the dash removed and or disconnected which is quite a common prctice with used cars.

If you bought this from a used car dealer or new car dealer you may have some recourse against the dealer for an implied warranty but you will need to check with your particular states rules & regulations on this.

If you bought it from a private individual, Your STUCK.

I honestly do not get that work on the newer Eagles and I do not have a book that can even give you any help.

Your only other option is to take it to another dealer and talk t the service mangaer about your problem.
