Expert: Brian Skellie Date: 5/30/2008 Subject: nose and ear piercings have an odor
Question Why do they sometimes smell? What causes the smell and how do you get rid of it?
Usually when you have a piece of jewlery in for a long period of time. I never take my nose stud out, but lately it seems to have a stink or odor. Help!
Answer The smell from body jewelry is usually a combination of things. Malodorous sweat and oil build up in combination with shedding skin, soap and other bathing products such as shampoo. Your piercings should always be rinsed very clean of soap and other residues and dried with a disposable sanitary product such as sterile gauze or a tissue. Titanium with an anodized finish and platinum both cause the least odor in reaction to the tissue, and tarnish the least in piercings.
