Subject: discharge from newish tongue piercing

Question
I got my tongue pierced three weeks ago. For the first two weeks I didn't have any problems, but now I am experiencing an off-white to light yellow discharge from time to time throughout the day. My tongue is not sore, unusually red, or discolored. The only problem I have is the discharge, and I wonder if this is a normal part of the healing? I am rinsing with a salt water solution, and besides that I leave it alone. I had my tongue pierced years ago, and I just can't remember if this is normal or not.

Answer
This could be infection, and if you changed your jewelry to a new piece that was not autoclave sterilized, it may require a visit to your doctor. http://www.piercing.org/faq/tongue.html can help you with more information about what you should expect and related care information.
