Ear & Body Piercing/Ear Piercing

I have had my earlobe pierced once at Claire's with a gun. I didn't know then that a needle was safer. Now, four years later, I am thinking about getting a second piercing in the earlobe and possibly a third piercing higher up my ear in the cartilage. What I want to know is this; is it safe to get these places pierced? I have heard that ear piercings can possibly disrupt your balance, that they can cause your cartilage in your ear to shatter and such, and that they can lead to many diseases and could even never heal right and look weird forever. Is that true? What are all of the cons of getting these piercings? whats the worst that can happen? and, if it is safe, what is the best and safest way to go about getting these piercings? thank you!!

People have pierced many areas of the ear cartilage safety for centuries, probably longer.

Ear piercings do not disrupt anything, that is a myth.

A poorly done ear cartilage piercing can result in significant permanent, and often visible damage or deformation of the cartilage.

Infectious disease is a serious concern, and appropriate sterilization and asepsis are not to be taken lightly.

Healing can be prolonged in the upper ear extremities, due to reduced circulation. Optimal jewelry choice and placement will have much value in reducing the difficulty of healing. http://jewelry.piercing.org/ explains more.

The worst that could happen starts with death and dismemberment and works back from there. Is that likely? No.

The safest, most conscientious means to the shiny end of getting new jewelry put in your ear is to visit a qualified professional for the service.

Where are you located? I should be able to refer you to a colleague in your area.
