Ear & Body Piercing/Getting shorter bar for tongue piercing

Question
I got my tongue pierced on Monday 5/13 and I'm supposed to go get the bar shorter this monday. My sister had it done years ago and she said they stretched her tongue and it was painful. Are all experiences like that? and whats the process exactly to get the bar shorter?

Answer
In my experience, changing the jewelry should be a relief, not a pain. The jewelry is usually the exact same thickness, just shorter. In my studio practice, we use internally threaded titanium posts with an extremely smooth surface so that the old jewelry can simply be held in connection with the new jewelry, and one slides in as the other slides out.

If your sister had it stretched, it may have been due to an inappropriate size used for the initial piercing, especially if she was pierced at one studio and then had it changed at another. The smallest standard thickness I use is 2mm (12 gauge)
