Ear & Body Piercing/Ear Piercing

I got my ears pierced (lobes) when I was about 3 years old. I stopped wearing earrings for a long time and now, at 20, want to start wearing them again. Every time I put earrings in, my ears get red, warm and a little itchy. I'm not sure if this is due to a metal allergy or just because I have not worn earrings in such a long time. Any suggestions on what I should do?

It may be that the holes are getting scratched or otherwise irritated when jewelry is inserted. Try a bit  of water based lubricant, and make sure that your jewelry has rounded ends and a smooth surface. The material should meet the standards described at http://jewelry.safepiercing.org/ to ensure that they can stabilize for a few weeks, prior to trying unknown materials or metals that may tarnish. It is also possible that you are sensitive to the jewelry material itself.
