About Sue
Expertise
I will answer questions in the area of Child Development for children ages two to five. This includes social, emotional, cognitive & language development, large motor & fine motor skills, behavioral issues, potty training and parental concerns. I can give ideas for lesson plans and classroom activities. I will also help with daycare/preschool policies. I can also help with licensing requirements for preschools/daycare, however, I am only familiar with the licensing requirements for the state of Michigan.

Experience
I have been teaching in preschools for 25 years. My main experience has been with children two to five years of age. The last 16 years I have been the lead teacher for the pre-kindergarten program.

Organizations
NAEYC

Education/Credentials
I have a B.S. degree and a teaching certificate in elementary education with a ZA endorsement (child development) from my graduate level classes.

Subject: "grandfathering" in a teacher with other country license

Question
My friend is from Iraq. She is 67 and has been an assistant teacher in a preschool setting in Michigan for the past 14 years. She has been with the present school for 9 years. She retired in Iraq from teaching. There are no documents except her teaching card. Is it possible that she may qualify as a lead teacher in Michigan with her Michigan teaching experiences? I know 480 hours equals teaching experience towards some recordkeeping but do not know what. She is on her own in the world and needs to work for several more years. She is a U.S. Citizen. Thank you for any direction on this subject. Kahlen!

Answer
Hi Kahlen,
I am sending you a web-site where you can find out the information you need.

http://www.michigan.gov/dhs/0,1607,7-124-5455_27716_27718---,00.html

This is the site for the State of Michigan licensing.  Scroll down to the "Rules and Statues" section and click on "Licensing Rules for Child Care Centers OCAL PUB-08", then go to pages 6 and 7.  They have the requirements for Lead Teachers.

If you have any further questions, you can call Department of Human Services and speak with someone in licensing of child care centers.  Telephone: (517) 373-2035

I think she could qualify as a lead teacher, if she meets all the state requirements.  But the final decision is probably up to the preschool director.

Good luck.
Sue
