Early Childhood Education - director experience

Expert: Pam Koons - 6/27/2009

Question
I am a credential teacher and have experience teaching preschool to elementary
kids.  I would like to open my own home preschool but wonder if I should take
up a site supervising / coordinating job at a preschool first.  I wonder if the
management experience will help with the set up of my own small school.
Please advice.

Answer
Hi Penny,
That's a very good question. Really, there are 3 answers, each a bit different.

1) It depends a lot on your own moxie and investigation/research skills. I started my 1st preschool with an ECE degree and no supervisor experience at all. The naivety propelled me and I was very successful. But this was 20 some years ago, and times were different then. I think nowdays:

2) Yes- you should have some kind of Director experience, if nothing else to learn how to run a preschool business. Most schools will fail in the 1st 3 years, not because of the program, but because the owner or director had no business sense.

3) If you don't, or cannot find a position to gain this experience, you can always contact me at my site: www.PreschoolMentor.com,where I help Teachers to start up their own home preschools/daycares along the business-side of things. Take a look there and please give me a call for a free consult. I can and will help you!

Thanks again and much success to you!
