I will answer questions in the area of Child Development for children ages two to five. I can also help with licensing requirements for preschools/daycare, however, I am only familiar with the licensing requirements for the state of Michigan.

Early Childhood Education - Fulfilling lic. requirements in MI

Question
I am currently a Case Manager for Disabled Adults.  I have one baby and I am considering opening a home daycare once I have my next baby.  I live in Auburn Hills. I was wondering where to find classes/workshops to fulful the licensing requirements.  I have had Psychology courses but not specifically geared for children and I have completed the Gentle Teaching Course at Macomb Oakland Regional Center and was wondering if they would fulfill the requirements? I am also CPR/1st aide certified but not specifically for children although it was covered in the classes.  Would that count?
I would like to start taking any courses I need to now, so that I will be prepared when I am ready to open the daycare.

Thankyou for your time.

Answer
Hi Ingrid,
I am sending you the website that has all the licensing requirements for the State of Michigan.
http://www.michigan.gov/cis/0,1607,7-154-10568_17949---,00.html
Under the heading "How do I get Licensed", click on "Family Day Care in Your Home".
You will have three years to complete CPR/first aid course for children.
The state does not require any child development classes for family daycare homes.  If you wish to take some classes, try Oakland University or Oakland Community College.

Good Luck & Happy New Year,
Sue
