Question HI, I am a senior, majoring in Early Childhood Education, and I am also getting my special ed certification, which means I will be able to teach pre-k special ed. I am trying to figure out exactly what I want to do with my degree since I am graduating in May. I am not sure I want to jump into teaching because I am kind of losing the passion. I looked into becoming a child life specialist, working in hospitals, but it seems like that takes an internship, and I really do not have the financial situation to allow me to put off getting a "real job". Do you have any suggestions, other than a daycare director, opening a day care, or teaching? I am qualified to do social work, etc. but I am kind of looking for something different...something exciting! Thanks for your time. Tara
Answer Hi Tara,
Thx for your questions. I am trying to understand your desires so I can help you. I hear you say that you want to work with kids, yet I am also hearing you might not be happy with a school environment so you are looking for another type of environment. I hope this is right. Just know that many other positions might require you to have held some kind of teaching job. You might like it if you try it! :-)
Another avenue you might look into is child mentoring, mediation, or advocacy. It is within the legal system, so there is great pay, benefits and a lot of room to grow. It is a tough job, however, as you are working not only with Kids, but also their Parents. You would have to undergo a bit more training, but not too much. Look into this with your local Dept. of Social Health Services, or any Volunteers of America for more info.
Good Luck!!
