Question
I was wondering, why is college so expensive? How can 12 years of education prior to college be covered by taxes, but 4 afterwards cost a fortune? Can't the average university get rid of unneed technologies they only buy to make they're school look impressive, get rid of most areas of adminstration, not sponsor research (unrelated to the students who pay to learn there), have less area that needs grounds keeping, don't pay the top professors $125,000 regardless of how long they've worked for the school, etc? Surely there can't be that many "necessary" costs? I used to go to a community college and I could pay the tuition there from a part-time minimum wage job, now while at University I needed to take out a loan which I can't forsee paying back before my high school reunion. Are colleges run like businesses? If so, should they be in your opinion? I think anyone who wants to learn should be able to, right? Only 30% of the U.S. population max has a bachelor's degree, and I'm told that many jobs require a masters degree at entry levels. I think colleges should fight the battle against ignorance rather than charge a fortune because they can? What are your thoughts?

Answer
The fact is in k-12 everyone is paying for it.
The cost of schools take up much local property taxes
plus extra money from the state and federal taxes.
No colleges are not run like businesses.
Costs can be quite high. The actual costs at state run universities and colleges are not reflected in what the actual costs are as tax money pays part of the cost.
If subtracted out what you suggested you would get
get the costs you see in small prep schools.
It would still be a substantial amount.
As you suggest not everyone goes to college
thus why its an indivudual expence.
Plus your loans can be repaid by the greater earning you will have over a lifetime.
