About Walter Wornick
Expertise
I can answer questions about travel to and within Bulgaria. I can advise on sites to see and historic significance of many towns, cities and areas in Bulgaria. I am especially interested in the many monasteries and Eastern Orthodox churches in the country, places of horticultural interest, railroads, museum villages, folk festivals and places of scenic beauty, agricultural products, wines and birdlore.

Experience
I have visited Bulgaria, as a tourist, six times in the last six years. I have traveled widely in the country and have many contacts there. I have some knowledge of the history of the country and collect books about Bulgaria for reference purposes.I do not speak Bulgarian, but have associates who do.

Publications
I have written about trips to Bulgaria for the International Travel News and the Ascutney Travel Newsletter.

Education/Credentials
I have an MS in Education and some advanced work.

Subject: The Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria

Question
My girlfriend and I want to travel the Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria in July and August.  Would it be hard to find a room for the night in the towns we come to or is it nessesary to have reservations?

Answer
I don't know what nationality you are, but the reason I mention this is that British Bucket Shops have package deals for vacations at Black Sea resorts like Golden Sands and Sunny Beach. You would do much better price-wise, with one of those deals than booking on site. But there are many accomodations at many price levels along the whole coast. Those places are mostly filled with non-Bulgarians and cater to Brits and Germans. The dominant nationality that vacations along the coast are Ukranians, as they can drive down in one day, and I find that, in itself, of interest.

Again, I don't know how you will travel, car, bus, train? Varna is a good base and there are buses and boats to some of the towns up and down the coast. Nice park and beach area. Balchik, in the north is peaceful with a boardwalk along the coast and many Inns and B & B boarding house places and boats to other places on the coast.

Nesebar is historic but has never appealed to me.It is very touristy and resturants and such may take advantage of guests, but it is good for a bit of a wander. Private homes rent rooms in all of these areas, if you like that kind of accomodation. They are usually cleaner than some of the 2 star hotels....It is always wise to inspect rooms before booking.I use a small travel agency there: Mike Travel <miketrvl@mbox.infotel.bg> and they can provide services at all price levels, throughout the country.

So I would say, in a nutshell, you can get acomodation during July and August if you have limited demands and transportation that would allow you to travel further on if what you find is not of your liking. If you are seeking sun, the beach, Brits & Germans and somewhat better accomodationms a package tour to Golden Sands or Sunny Beach might be for you. Have a safe trip....
