About Warren D. Miller, CFA, ASA, CMA, CPA
Expertise
My in-depth knowledge of economics is confined to three sub-disciplines: Austrian economics, industrial organization, and evolutionary economics. Other questions dealing with macroeconomics, the traditional neoclassical paradigm, labor economics, environmental economics, agricultural economics, health economics, and so on should go to those who have the appropriate expertise. N.B.: I DO NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS MARKED 'PRIVATE' because I believe that knowledge should be shared, not hoarded. I also believe that such questions are likely to come those trying to cheat. Similarly, as one who was a full-time academic for half a decade, I can recognize test and homework questions several time zones away. Therefore, please do not demean yourself by submitting such questions to me. Those who do so are cheating, pure and simple, and I WILL call you out publicly if I believe you are doing so. I have a zero-tolerance policy where cheating and dishonesty are concerned. In addition, please don't imitate the businessman who posted a request for help in August 2008. He expressly denied that he was seeking "investment advice" and said that his query was for, and I quote, "educational and informational purposes." Later, he allowed as how his questions related to the possible purchase of a $500K piece of equipment. I said I thought he had misrepresented himself. Bottom line: high-end business consulting is how I make my living. I am the sole support for my family. Please respect that fact and don't try to get for free what our clients pay for. If your company is big enough to have a sophisticated problem, it's big enough to pay for the kind of expert advice we provide. Beckmill Research, LLC, is a 95-octane firm. We're small, but we've been at this for nearly 18 years. We know what we're doing. Finally, please DO NOT ask for investment advice. I am not licensed to provide such advice. If you want such advice, check with your financial planner or other financial adviser.

Experience
I work with Austrian economics (which is different in major respects from the traditional neoclassical model), industrial organization (which is about industry structure, conduct, and performance), and evolutionary economics (almost, but not quite, the economic analog of its biological counterpart) everyday in my work. I appraise closely-held businesses, provide exit-planning services, and offer high-level strategic analysis, advice, and clients to CEOs and owners of mid-sized businesses. Understanding, applying, and writing about these disciplines is an essential part of how I have made my living since 1993.

Economics - photography in the Great Depression

Expert: Warren D. Miller, CFA, ASA, CMA, CPA - 10/21/2009

Question
My name is Oksana Kuzmich and I am a student at A.C. Reynolds High School. Currently I am enrolled in AP United States History and have decided to participate in the National History program. This rigorous academic program is a year-long project, requiring an extensive use of respected primary and secondary sources.  In this program, students research a chosen topic, based on a given theme and present their findings in a variety of methods.  This year the theme is “Innovation in History”. The topic I am searching is the historical impact of photography.

While I am sure you are busy, would you be willing to answer some questions that will help me in my research and/or help direct me to other sources that will also be useful?  I will be grateful for any assistance you can provide.

Answer
Oksana, I'll be glad to try to help you, of course. No guarantees, but I'll certainly be glad to try. I'm no authority on "the historical impact of photography"--I'm not sure exactly where one goes w/that topic--but I'll certainly be glad to try to help, at least to the extent that your questions bear on innovation and photography. Certainly recent breakthroughs have transformed the business of photography as well as its applications, and that is very interesting stuff, I think.

Please tell me where A.C. Reynolds High School is. Congratulations on being enrolled in an AP U.S. History course. I think that's fabulous - so many young Americans are ignorant of American history. It's great that you're building a deep understanding of our wonderful country and how it has gotten where we are today.

One small favor, if you don't mind: I'd appreciate it if you don't send me more than two questions at a time. Once I answer them, you can send two more. Let's set a limit of total questions, though - I want you to make careful choices. I'll be glad to to try to answer ten SPECIFIC questions or 4 broad ones. Take your pick, Oksana.

Economics, you see, is about choices. We can never have everything we want. And, since I'm an unpaid volunteer, a project like yours exposes me to the potential of having to spend a LOT of time answering a LOT of questions. I also have a family to support, so, of necessity, I must impose what I hope are gentle and non-suffocating constraints. But you're also getting a dose of economics here: choose your questions carefully. Make sure you word them precisely. Read them aloud before you send them - your ears will hear things your eyes will never see.

Besides being an unpaid volunteer, our small consulting business is very, very, very busy just now. My wife is also sick, though not seriously. Please be patient if I don't respond immediately. If you have a deadline or something like that, please tell me what it is so that I can keep it in mind and won't let you down.

Take care. And remember to think about those questions carefully. In fact, if I were you, I'd probably write all of my questions--4 or 10--out first and make sure that I've chosen the four best broader ones or 10 best specific ones. You have to make good use of the resource you have--me. But that resource is not unlimited, so you must treat it carefully. Just like economics, my friend, just like economics.

I look forward to hearing from you.
