Economics - VAT tax on items imported into US

Expert: Docs99 - 6/11/2009

Question
Hi. I live in the US.  I would like to purchase a product from a company in the UK.  Their price for this item on their website states it is "VAT inclusive". As a US citizen purchasing such an item from abroad, should the VAT be subtracted from the total, or do I pay it and somehow try to get a refund?  Thanks! Kate

Answer
Thanks for your query. You should not be liable for the Value Added Tax in the UK, provided the products are taken out of the UK. You may want to contact Customer Service.  What may happen is that they may charge you the VAT and then send you a rebate via credit card.  Would be best to talk to Customer Service. Good luck.
