AboutJane Akshar Expertise I have extensive knowledge of tourism in Egypt, specifically Luxor, and Egyptology in general. I can answer questions on travel, hotels, restaurants as well as about the sites and dealing with the locals. I can tell recommend deserted sites where you are the only tourist, local guides who will take you walking over the hills, reliable drivers, taxis, donkey and camel men, sailing and motor boat captains.
I can answer questions on Egyptology(up to the end of the New Kingdom) as I have been involved with Egyptology for over 40 years and have contacts in the Antiquities department and with many of the Archaeological teams in Luxor.
Experience I have been coming to Egypt as a tourist since 1979 and moved to live in Luxor in 2003. I love to help people fall in love with Egypt. I guide guests around the sites in Luxor and run a small tourism business renting flats (apartments) to tourists. I am married to an Egyptian and have a bilingual teenage daughter. I write regular feature articles for Tour Egypt and run a News Blog on Luxor.

Question Hi. I am coming to Egypt for official work. My stay will be for min 2 months in PortSaid. I will get allowance of 150 AED (United Arab Emirates Dirham) per day approx 220 EGP as daily allowance. With this money I have to take care of my food only, rest all expenses will be bared by the company. How much will be the expense for food per day? How about Egyptian food? Plz tell me some special food names.
Thanks in advance.
Answer I do not know Port Said but certainly in Luxor I would expect to pay under 50Le for a 3 course dinner in the more local places. Not the 5* hotels. Personally I find shopping for myself self catering under 100Le would cover me for the whole day including toiletries.
Your allowance is by no means generous but it is achievable.
There is so much Egyptian food, lots of vegetarian stuff as well. I like foul, fasoulia, taymiya, kebab halal, tagens.
I have just thought, there is a fantastic restaurant in Luxor and they have a menu on their website with prices and descriptions of various food, have a look there. http://www.sofra.com.eg/menu_choice_1.html
