Question G'day Ross,
I've decided to build a guitar the same as Matt Bellamys M1D1 guitar made by Hugh Masnon and got to the point of how to make the string Thru concept.
Here is the guitar im building: http://www.musewiki.org/images/MansonM1D1.jpg
Answer Daniel: I'm a little unclear as to what you mean by "making it work." Are you asking how to perform the operation or where to put it, or something else? Essentially, the string-through idea is to put ferrules through the body at the bridge connection, allowing the ball ends to be fed through the rear of the body. This puts more of the string in contact with the guitar and, theoretically, makes the energy transfer of the string more efficient for increases resonance and sustain (this often increases volume, as well). If you're using an adjustable-type bridge like the one shown in the pic, then the matter is simply drilling holes for the ferrules in position so the strings will feed easily into the bridge saddles. If you can let me know more specifically what you need help with, I'll let you know. I'm looking forward to hearing from you!
