Question
i have acquired this hondo to practise repair techniques. i've never seen a bowen handle before. read some bad reviews but mainly from guys who should have a floyd rose set up. i've been cleaning up all of the machining edges with tool and de-makers files and fine sandpaper.  all of those things seem relevant but now i'm into the pickups. how do i tell what brand they might be. they appear to be fairly sealed in. it was made in japan so i guess it to be around 72-74. haven't played it. still assembling after cleaning everything. so i guess the question should be do these pickups (soap bar) sound good? i'd really like to see inside but am afraid to try and take it apart.

Answer
Hey Gary, I wouldn't take them apart. Pickups use pretty sensitive & fine wire wrapped around the coils of a magnet & it's pretty easy to break. P-90's sound amazing. They are single coils like on a strat, only fatter sounding with more output. It's a very unique & sought after sound. I would imagine that the pickups are made either by the same company who manufactured the guitar, or they outsourced to a larger company. Other than that, there is little I can tell you. If they end up not working or not sounding great, you can replace them with Gibson P-90's or Seymour Duncan P-90 Stacks. (Hum canceling with P-90 sound) Good luck, if you have any other questions, juts drop me a line.
Peace - J.
