Let me try to clear up some confusion in the USA. single phase 110 or 115 volts  has 1 hot leg- next is single phase 220 (is double phase) has 2 hot legs, not in the same phase! our houses have this. Next consider 3 phase, has 3 hot legs one leg of the 3 is less volts but it works fine! it rather works like this- not wise to use the lesser leg for a single line just use one of the other two, The white wires are mostly Neutral the Green and Uninsulated wires are  Safety  Grounds
