Electrical Engineering - Analog To Digital Conversion

Expert: Dave Nyce - 10/22/2009

Question
Our company uses a tension and distance monitoring system on winch systems.  Our tension measurement devices give us a 4 to 20 ma signal and the distance measurement devices give us voltage pulses at each increment of 0.1 ft.  We wish to digitalize these signals and input them to a Mac via the USB port.  We are looking for accuracy levels of +/- 1% or better reading the 4 to 20 signal.  Can you recommend a suitable supplier of the analog to digital converter.  I realize we will also need software prepared to utilize the digital signal.

Answer
There are several modules on the market for converting a 4 to 20 mA input signal to digital data output on a USB port.  One is:

Action Pak company also makes one, and there are others.

Hope this helps!

Dave
