Electrical Engineering - measuring of current

Expert: cleggsan - 10/30/2009

Question
Please tell how can DC current from DC source be measured with the help of ammeter? I think if positive and negative terminals of source are connected with positive and negative terminals of ammeter respectively then this will short the circuit and we won't get the expected value.

Answer
To measure current with an ammeter the current must pass through the meter. So, the circuit must be interrupted whilst the ammeter terminals connected allowing the current to pass through the meter to give its measure of the current.  When the measurement is complete the meter leads are removed and the circuit reconnected.

OR. you may connect the leads first, then cut the wire so as to force the current through the meter.  Then upon completion of the measurement, resolder the connection and remove the meter leads. This way you do not have to turn off the circuit.  Be careful if the voltage is high enough to be dangerous.  Do you know how to work around voltages?  If not, better disable the circuit whilst you are doing the connections, etc.

Good Luck.
