Electrical Engineering - solar energy

Expert: cleggsan - 10/30/2009

Question
hello, Sir, Is it possible to use solar energy for my home use? if yes then how and which device should buy, and how much it will be costly!

Answer
Oh, what a question.  It is asked every day by someone.  But, from a scientific point of view it is really a naive thought.

What do you do when the sun does not shine?  What do you do when the lights are all on at night and the cooking appliances are working?  How do you get electricity with no sun?  How do you store the energy and how do you release it when it is needed.  You cannot store DC from the solar panels.  So, you will need lots of batteries and ac converters, maybe?  What if you need more panels than your roof top and your back yard have space for?  What if the building codes will not allow you to have that many acres of solar panels laying around?

With the very low energy conversion of solar panels you will need a tremendous number of square meters to get much electric output.

Most homes that are using solar power are maybe getting enough to run hot bathwater or some warming of the family room.  In the winter when the days are short and the need is great the problem is amplified.

I shant go into any scientific lecture.  However, do read this informative comment here below:

Please google or bing around for further readings.  It won't take long to find out that the little bits of power you get from the best panels is very, very expensive compared with pulling it off the power grid or your local provider.   If you are a long way out in the desert or up in the mountains you may be able to justify the cost, but for the typical American home it looks like whole house solar power is many, many years away. Maybe decades.  Maybe centuries.
