Electrical Engineering - three phase convertion

Expert: cleggsan - 11/9/2009

Question
I have printing machine which required three power supply 5 HP, I have learned that i can made a converter using three phase motor and capacitor so that i can use the machine in single phase power supply

can you please give a electrical diagram for the converter and the computation of capacitor I need will use

thanks in advance

Answer
From everything I have learned it is a better solution to just replace the motor with a new single phase than to convert the 3 phase:

The problem with converting is you have to have a starting function. It is not a standard cook-book procedure because it depends on the load on the shaft of the motor and the windings of the specific motor.  In other words it is a trial and error engineering task.

If you would like to convert the single phase power to 3-phase there are many methods of doing that. Here is one example to study:

I hope this discourages you from wanting to convert and to make the decision to replace the motor with a single phase unit!
