Electrical Engineering - electric motor control

Expert: cleggsan - 7/2/2009

Question
Hi Cleggsan, Thanks for helping.  I want to reduce the speed of my saw motor (120V, 15 amp) to allow the use of a special blade.  Can I do this without too much of a torque loss or risk of overheating through some kind of voltage step-down device?   Thanks again.

Answer
Here is an interesting discussion about the type of motor you may be referring to. Please read through it:

May I suggest you contact with Will or his colleague who are experts on the electric motor allexpert panel.

In reducing the speed I think you will suffer some torque loss.  How much I cannot say; it will depend on how you accomplish the speed reduction.  You might be better off adding an SCR control of some kind. You can buy these in motor shops.

Hope this helps.
