Electrical Engineering - 380-400V 3phase 50hz to US power 60hz?

Expert: cleggsan - 8/26/2009

Question
Can one rewind a motor from 380/400V 50hz so it will run with 480V 60hz? Or do I have to replace all 3 phase motors when using the equipment in the US.

Thank you for your help

Andre von Schoenebeck

Answer
Well, it depends on what the motor is going to be used for.  If it is a light weight motor and you don't care if the speed is a little bit off you can just use it directly as is or use a step-down transformer to match the voltage.  When connected to 60Hz, it will run a little faster speed.

But, if it is a critical application, like medical or instrumentation or emergency generation, etc., you would be better off getting new motors that match the new electrical energy source.

Do you need more?   If so, tell me the general application area you are using the motors in..

C
PS: Rewinding the motor(s) will cost more than just buying new motors  - unless they are really big HP units like over 100 HP ratings.
