Electrical Engineering - projects about transformer

Expert: cleggsan - 8/21/2009

Question
can you suggest the best project about transformer

Answer
A really good project is to measure and report on the efficiency of different transformers.  The heat loss when run near full power vs half power, etc.  Then you could make a plot of efficiency vs load level.  You could also plot on the same set of curves the heat dissipation.  Since it might be impracticle to employ large, commercial grade transformers you may want to use transformers from your lab that are already available to you.  Efficiency can easily be measured by monitoring input voltage and current; against output voltage and current.  Using a resistive load is the best to get uniform and easy to obtain readings.  If you apply a reactive load then you must monitor power factor as well, which will complicate the experiments.

Good Luck,
C
