Question
The life of incandescent lamps is increased when dimmed.

How are LED lamps affected when they are dimmed?

Answer
LED lamps can be dimmed but not in the same way as filament lamps.  Some LEDs have strange characteristics when the current passing through them is decreased. Especially at the conduction knee of the I vs V which some lamps will flicker or change colors.

Above web page is a good tutorial on LED lighting for residence applications.

And, yes, in most cases, dimming the LED can extend its life as well as the dimmer electronics.

Hope this helps.
