Dear Prof Cleggsan

Such an open ended question!  The investment required will depend on the products being manufactured, the quantity being planned, the amount of tooling necessary, level of automation anticipated, manufacturing space needed.  And so on.

Most toys now days are manufactured in relatively high volumes in factories with a relatively high level of automation.  The process of sourcing materials and parts, warehousing and shipping facilities require intensive investments.

Many toy companies use third party contract manufacturers to produce the product; the investment costs are buried into the price negotiation with the third party producer.

It is a pretty complicated business and requires extensive investigation and planning.

A staff electrical engineer could help you with equipment choices and factory layout were you to proceed with your idea.  Market research may lead you to understand the complexity of such a business plan and the treachery of the competition for the children toy business.
