Dear Prof Cleggsan

Can all Black & White movies be converted to Color movies?.

Examples - Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy movies.

Answer
Converting black and white to color in the early days was a very intense hand labor.  It required the film artist to add the colors frame by frame.  It was very time consuming and labor intense and because it required artistic operators it was expensive.

Today, with added technology and some automation with cinema software it is much faster and less expensive, none the less it still requires a frame by frame color additions.  See the following link which give a good explanation of the various procedures that are required:
