Electrical Engineering - Generator Exciter and Diode

Expert: cleggsan - 12/10/2006

Question
Dear All
1.What are the fucntions of the exciter in gas turbine generator?
2.What are the fucntions of the exciter diode(if that what they call) and the effect if the diode fails?

Answer
Exciter controls the magnetic field in the generator system and controls the output voltage and/or current.

The diode is to make certain there is no reverse current in the exciter coils.  If it goes open there will be not current in the exciter.  If the diode shorts out it could allow reverse current in the field which would throw the voltage regulators and/or the line balance out of whack.

Hope this helps.
