AboutDave Nyce Expertise I have been an electronics engineer for 25 years. I can answer questions on analog and digital circuits and my specialty is sensors.
Experience I am the inventor on 23 US patents, and also some foreign ones. Developed sensors for over 25 years. Licensed private pilot (airplane and rotorcraft), have HAM radio license. I'm not an expert in computer networking.
Question I think I want to go into engineering, but there's so many kinds I don't know which one to go into. I'm considering electrical engineering because my community college has a good program where I'll be able to do most of the work there, then transfer for the final credits to a university. What do electrical engineers do exactly? What do you like/dislike about the job? Do you have any recommendations about the field, such as what interests or qualities a person should have who is going into it. What about the future job demand and average salaries? I would appreciate any information you could offer about ee or even engineering in general.
Answer I think you have more opportunities when majoring in electrical engineering. Also take the courses available in other engineering curriculums to get a wider knowledge base. I majored in electrical engineering, but also took a lot of mechanical and some chemical engineering courses. I have actually held jobs as an electronics engineer, mechanical engineer, and chemical engineer. In developing sensors, as I do, this ability comes in handy.
It is difficult for a mechanical engineer, for example, to pick up electronics skills, but not very hard for an electrical engineer to have mechanical skills.
